Surfaces that you’re familiar with, like a chopping board, for example, have two sides. Can you imagine a surface with only one side? 😟 You probably can't because this defies your 3D perception, but they do exist, and a Moebius Strip is one! It was discovered by two German mathematicians, Johann Listing and August Moebius back in 1858. To draw a line 📝 on both sides of a normal paper strip, you have to draw one on its interior ✐, lift the pencil, and draw another on its exterior ✎. However, on a Moebius strip, you will notice that you can trace a line on the whole paper without lifting your pencil, as the strip only has one side. It has its benefits too! The Moebius Strip triggered the development of an entire field of research called topology 😱and changed the way we study the natural world. You can easily make your own Moebius Strip by taking a strip of paper, giving it an odd number of half-twists, and taping the ends together to form a loop.
